Madison is no stranger to camp. In fact, she may hold the record for most summers at CCAC- she has been coming every summer since 2011. When you ask what Madison’s favorite thing about camp is, she can sum it up in one word. It’s not the ziplines, although that is her favorite activity. She actually doesn’t mind heights, and she admits she was a bit nervous the first time she stepped off that platform, but she felt really proud of herself when she did. She’s gone countless times since, even helping the younger campers overcome their fear of making that big leap. But her favorite thing about camp? That’s simple. The people. “It’s a family atmosphere,” Madison says. Madison considers everyone at camp her family, and they’ve taught her some important life lessons. She says that being at camp, “I’ve learned to accept new things and go with the flow.” She has even carried those lessons over to other areas in her life. At school, it’s easier to approach people because of how she interacts with her camp family.
It’s not surprising, then, that Madison’s best memory of all her time at camp is the first time she heard “Home” at opening assembly. Campers always start the day with an energizer, singing and doing motions together to a song that serves as a theme for the summer. For Madison, it’s a song that perfectly describes her feelings about
camp her family.
Settle down, it’ll all be clear
Don’t pay no mind to the demons
They fill you with fear
The trouble—it might drag you down
If you get lost, you can always be found
Just know you’re not alone
‘Cause I’m gonna make this place your home
